Mermaids
Myths and legends about mermaids have captivated humans for hundreds of years. Magical beings with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a fish, mermaid stories show human's longstanding fascination with the ocean and everything that lives under the sea. Sometimes mermaids were considered unlucky, and seeing one meant dangerous weather at sea. Other times mermaids were considered a sign of good luck, and many ships had figureheads of mermaids to ensure good weather and a safe way back to land.
